Auto-Hide Siblings when expanding your family tree in Ancestry’s vertical view

I prefer working with Ancestry’s vertical tree view while doing my family history research, especially when taking screenshots to share with family and clients. Sometimes I do not want siblings to automatically appear when expanding generations in my tree, so I created a tool which automatically hides all siblings as soon as they appear. This tool can be toggled on and off directly from the family tree interface depending on your preference.

When you activate Auto-Hide Siblings in Family Tree, a button is added to the top right corner of all family trees which allows you to select whether siblings are automatically shown or hidden when expanding generations in your family tree.

Highlight Matches of Matches over 50cM (or any amount) on Ancestry DNA ProTools

With an Ancestry ProTools subscription, your shared matches tab will now display matches of matches as well. This is an incredibly helpful feature which greatly assists with triangulating high-quality mutual matches. Finding who your matches match highly with can help establish deeper connections in your DNA match list. To identify these high matches, I created a plugin for Genea Research Tools which automatically highlights matches over 50cM or any amount you choose.

When you activate Highlight Matches of Matches 50cM+, any “match of a match” who shares more than 50cM with your mutual match will be automatically highlighted in red and the text will be bolder/larger. You can change the cM threshold at which matches are highlighted in Advanced Settings. Note: Requires Ancestry ProTools subscription.

Add DNA Painter Shared cM tool button to DNA matches on Ancestry

The DNA Painter Shared cM Tool is an excellent resource for helping to establish relationships based the amount of cM shared with your matches. Their crowdsourced databases offers valuable insights which you can use to determine a range for different relationship types. To make this tool more easily accessible I added a button to the Ancestry DNA match page which links to the appropriate page on the Shared cM tool, available now in Genea Research Tools.

When you activate DNA Painter Shared cM Tool Button, on the Trees and Ethnicity tab of a DNA match a button will be added which opens the DNA Painter Shared cM Tool with the matches shared cM.

Make your Ancestry screenshots more printer friendly with Ancestry Printable Tree

I often take screenshots of family trees on Ancestry to share with my family and clients. When I need to print these family trees, the dark background and low-contrast lines of the default Ancestry tree make this difficult. To address this, I developed a custom tool that modifies how Ancestry trees are displayed, making them more printer-friendly for sharing offline.

When you activate Ancestry Printable Tree, any family tree you are viewing will have a cleaner look for user-friendly screenshotting. Simply deactivate the style when done screenshotting your tree to view the user-interface again.

Autofill names from the Ancestry text record viewer to the save pop-up

When researching new lines or documenting existing ones, I often save hundreds of records to my family tree in a single session. Using Ancestry’s text transcriptions in the record viewer allows me to quickly verify that a document matches the person I’m researching, and access suggested records recommended by Ancestry. To streamline this process and save valuable time, I developed a tool that automatically fills in the person’s name from the record you’re viewing into the appropriate box in the ‘Save to someone in your tree’ dialog box.

When you activate Text Records Name Autofill, as soon as you click the “Save to someone in your tree” button in the text transcription portion of Ancestry’s record viewer, it will automatically fill in the name of the person on...

Highlight DNA matches over 25cM (or any amount) on Ancestry

Finding high value DNA matches on Ancestry is an important part of genetic genealogy work. Frequently I am scanning different lines and searching different surnames looking for close connections to help build towards identifying a common ancestor. I created a tool which automatically highlights matches and shared matches over 25cM in red and increases the font size slightly, making them easier to see at a glance while scanning the page.

When you activate Ancestry Highlight DNA Matches 25cM+, any match or shared match displayed in your match list, shared matches list, or search list over 25cM will be automatically highlighted in red and the text will be bolder/larger. You can also adjust the threshold of the cM level at which matches are highlighted in the advanced settings panel....

Add advanced Ancestry Research Tools to all family trees

The Research Tools menu on Ancestry is incredibly helpful for quickly accessing key features on the website, adding quick links which are among the most common you will need in your research. This menu, however is only available while viewing your own tree, and on other users’ trees they are buried in the Tools menu at the top of the page. This plugin displays available Research Tools on all users’ trees, including your own, makes them bolder/larger and adds a new option to quickly upload a photo to that user in your tree.

When you activate Advanced Research Tools, viewing any person on Ancestry, whether it’s someone in your tree or in another user’s tree, all available Research Tools will be displayed. With this plugin you will want...
