What problem does Advanced Research Tools solve?

Ancestry’s default research tools are limited to a few standard links that only work within your own family tree, which can be insufficient for users who need more comprehensive tools for in-depth research. Advanced Research Tools expands the functionality of Ancestry’s research tools, providing a customizable set of quick-access links that streamline your workflow and extend their use to other users’ family trees. With this tool you can also use keyboard shortcuts to quickly access important items.

How does Advanced Research Tools work?

With Advanced Research Tools, the existing research tools menu is enhanced with a more extensive list of links, including options like Save to Tree, Quick Edit, and Edit Relationships. These links are fully customizable, allowing you to enable or disable specific tools based on your preferences. The enhanced tools also appear on other users’ family trees, making it easier to perform research across multiple trees. Links and buttons on the page will have letter icons next to them which correspond to their keyboard shortcuts.

How do I use Advanced Research Tools?

• Ensure Advanced Research Tools is enabled in the Genealogy Assistant pop-up panel and that Ancestry’s research tools are turned off from the Tools menu.
• To customize the links, click the Edit (pen and paper) icon next to Advanced Research Tools in the Genealogy Assistant panel.
  • Check the boxes for the tools you want to enable or disable.
  • Click Save Advanced Settings to apply your changes.
• Navigate to your own family tree or another user’s tree, and the enhanced tools will be available in the research tools menu.
• Press any corresponding keyboard shortcut and that item will be automatically opened.
